Two months after Wolf’s death we headed south
towards the interstate. Franklin went with us,
but when we reached the I80, he went east while
we went west. Before we parted, Franklin gave
me a gift. It was a long thin package wrapped
in black lether. I opened and found Guinever
sitting in my hands. I told him that I could
not accept the slamstick but he insisted, then
left.

It took Elizabeth and I some time to get back to
L.A. Not used to traveling, she was easily
fatigued and insisted on taking numerous breaks.
I would have been annoyed but she made each one
well worth my while and by the time we were
nearing city the breaks were for sex rather than
fatigue.

When I return to my office. I marched into the
editor’s office and placed my story on his desk.
Then I asked for a raise. When he hesitated, I
