The thick fog made it feel like they were
trapped in silence as they hiked the trail. It
was not only that no one spoke. There were no
birdcalls or wind, nor was there any sound of
creeks or any kind of stream. Even the footsteps
of the six men hiking up the lonely trail seemed
to make no noise. The fog was thick and the sky
overcast, making it seem like it was early in
the morning though it was, in fact,
mid-afternoon. Though it was late in the spring,
the air was still quite chilly due to the
elevation. The silence, in combination with the
lack of visibility, made everyone in the group
apprehensive. They were used to marching through
the steamy Congo forests that teamed with life.
