“I had always thought that the American north
east was just one large city.” It was Ma'ti who
spoke. He and Maruka stood on the roof of a
dilapidated warehouse, scanning the fiery
evening horizon. The world around them was
bathed in the red light of a dusty summer
evening. There was nothing around for miles but
fields and patches of trees. The only sign of
any civilization at all was the little two-lane
road that ran by the warehouse and disappeared
off into the distance.
“It is convenient that you were incorrect,” said
