Going to Denver by Libby Carswell © 2008

I lie face up in the back of the car
Darkness fills all the space.
We’re driving, driving for years
Light posts, stars and big green signs
A long line of light streaks in front of my
eyes
The window is cold as I press my toes on it to
squeeze the moon
The moon won’t be still…it keeps moving.
I try instead to squish the green sign that says
‘Denver’ too
But it just glides by.
Light, light, light, sign, light, sign, star,
star…oh the moon again
It’s a sleepy night—
I close my eyes and see my toes squashing my
brother.
